The SDA Design Standard, provides participants access to high quality housing models.  It also gives providers the flexibility to respond to participants needs and preferences.  The architects, builders and the community are also informed as to how housing for people with disability should be built.

For developers and investors, note that, an SDA design standard certification from an accredited third party SDA assessor, is necessary for an SDA dwelling enrolment application to be approved.  But this does not apply to an existing or legacy SDA dwelling seeking enrolment.

The following is a gist of the NDIS SDA Design Standard Category:

Improved Liveability

This housing design incorporates a reasonable level of physical access and enhanced provision for people with sensory, intellectual or cognitive impairment, to improve ‘Liveability’ (the photo above is an example of this).

Robust

A very resilient housing design, reducing the likelihood of reactive maintenance and reducing the risk to the participant and the community and incorporates a reasonable level of physical access provision.

Fully Accessible

A housing designed for people with significant physical impairment, thus incorporating a high level of physical access provision.

High Physical Support

Designed to incorporate a high level of physical access provision to house people with significant physical impairment that requires very high levels of support.

The timing and requirements that leads up to the SDA Design Standard taking full effect is stipulated in the SDA Design Standard Implementation Plan.
